Nebelung kat
History
A breeder called Cora Cobb is responsible for the development of the Nebelung breed and for gaining it breed recognition with TICA. The very first registered Nebelungs were a male called Siegfried, born in 1984 and a female called Brunhilde, born in 1985. Both were named after a famous German poem in which Siegfried rescues Brunhilde from a dragon.
Siegfried and Brunhilde’s mother was a black domestic shorthair named Elsa belonging to Cora's son. Siegfried and Brunhilde were both blue long haired cat and were siblings but not littermates. Siegfried and Brunhilde were the foundation of the new breed and produced their first litter in 1986 followed by a second in 1987. Cora applied to TICA for New Breed status (NBC). The Russian Blue was designated as an outcross for the new breed as this would allow Cora to widen her new breed’s gene pool but keep the coat qualities she wanted. In late 1980s cat fancying became a much more popular hobby in Eastern Europe and the Russian Blue was redeveloped with many of the new foundation Russian Blues now carrying the longhair gene. These cats proved a valuable new source of bloodlines to help develop the Nebelung breed and reduce inbreeding. TICA recognized the Nebelung for championship competition in 1997.Behaviour
Nebelungs are devoted cats that love the attention of their owners. They are happiest when curled up on their favourite lap but also enjoy exploring their homes. They tend to be wary of strangers, preferring instead the company of those that they know.
