Sølv History
The Silver is one of the oldest breeds of rabbit in the world. It is a British breed whose exact lineage is unknown. Some believe individual rabbits with silver tipped coats were brought to Britain from Asia whilst others believe the silver tipped coats arose from a spontaneous mutation in man-made rabbit warrens of Lincolnshire.
We can be certain that records of rabbits with silver tipped coats in Britain date back to the early 17th century. In the 19th century a concerted effort to develop Silvers as a pure breed was successful with Silvers first being shown as a breed in 1860 and then officially recognised in 1880.
The breed was very successful due to the booming fur trade and its desirable fur. Breeding stock was exported for large sums of money and the Silvers reached the USA before the end of the 19th century.
The original Silvers were black with silver tipped fur but since then, new colour variations have arisen in yellows, blues and browns.
